Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for the International Council of Ophthalmology Fellowship must meet the following requirements:

  • English is a required language.
  • All countries in the world are eligible.
  • Requirements for research:
    • Description of past work in the application’s field
    • Detailed CV including a list of publications and impact factors
    • The current program director’s endorsement
    • Confirmation of the chosen host university’s feasibility
    • a thorough description of how the research should be carried on during the fellowship
    • Statement of sustainability, such as assurance from the current program director that the applicant will be able to return after his or her fellowship and resume his or her previous employment.
  • Basic Requirements:
    • A minimum of 12 months of research experience is required.
    • On the ICO website, you can fill out an online application.
    • Applications for research work in the following sub-specialties will be accepted: Glaucoma, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Retina, Tumours, Uveitis, Dry Eye, and Cornea.
    • A copy of the ophthalmology specialist exam that must be passed.
    • The applicant must be relatively conversant in the fellowship training center’s language.
    • At the time of application, the applicant must be under the age of 40.

How to Apply

  • Choosing a Fellowship: Following the selection of your country, the ICO Fellowship(s) for which you are eligible will be displayed.
  • Check Your Eligibility: You’ll be requested to share information in order to see if you’re eligible for the ICO Fellowship you’ve chosen.
  • Review of ICO Eligibility: Your eligibility will be confirmed after your information is submitted to the ICO. You’ll either be notified of the decision and requested to complete the application, otherwise you’ll be informed you’re ineligible.
  • Apply to a Host Training Center: If you’re eligible, you’ll choose a host and submit an application. Please keep in mind that you are only allowed to apply to one host at a time.
  • Review of the Host Application: Your request will be looked through by the host you’ve chosen. If you are accepted, you must confirm the specifics that you and the host agreed on. If your request is turned down, you will have to find a new host.
  • Submission of a Fellowship Application: When your application is complete, you will be notified, and it will be assessed by the appropriate ICO Fellowship Committee.
